Land & Legacy Academy

From Burnout to Building a Legacy

The Founder Story

Land & Legacy did not begin as a business idea.

It began with a personal crisis.

For more than two decades, I built a successful career as a finance professional, advising businesses, solving complex problems, and helping organisations grow. On paper, everything looked successful. Behind the scenes, however, the constant pressure of leadership, responsibility, deadlines and decision-making slowly took its toll.

Eventually, my mind and body reached a point where they simply could not continue.

I experienced severe burnout.

For months I couldn't work. I needed professional support, time to recover, and space to rediscover who I was beyond my career. During that season, I wasn't looking for another business opportunity. I was searching for myself.

The healing didn't begin in an office.
It began outside.

I started planting a small vegetable garden.
I spent time with animals.
I walked paddocks.
I planted trees.
I learned to slow down and notice the rhythm of the seasons instead of the rhythm of my calendar.

Without realising it, the land was doing something remarkable.

It restored my perspective.
It restored my peace.
Eventually...
It restored me.

As I reflected on my own journey, I began asking a much bigger question.

If the land could help restore me, how many other people were living disconnected from the very environment that was designed to help us flourish?

Children spend more time indoors than ever before.
Families are busier than ever.
Schools are under increasing pressure to prepare students for an uncertain future.
Professionals are burning out.
Communities are becoming increasingly disconnected from nature, food production, practical skills and one another.

That question became the beginning of Land & Legacy.

Today, Land & Legacy is much more than a farm.

It is a living classroom.

A place where children build confidence by caring for animals.
Where families reconnect through shared experiences.
Where schools bring learning to life.
Where professionals rediscover balance.
Where retirees continue contributing their knowledge.
Where young people learn resilience, responsibility, stewardship and entrepreneurship through real experiences.

We believe that education should not only prepare people for employment.
It should prepare them for life.

We believe that caring for the land teaches people how to care for themselves, their families and their communities.

Land & Legacy exists because I know what it feels like to lose yourself.
It also exists because I know it is possible to find yourself again.

Sometimes healing begins in surprisingly simple places.
Sometimes it begins with soil beneath your feet.
Sometimes it begins by caring for something other than yourself.

And sometimes...
it begins on the land.

About the Founder

Mutsa James Simango, CPA, CGMA

Mutsa James Simango is the Founder of Land & Legacy Academy.

A qualified finance professional, CPA and Chartered Global Management Accountant, James has spent more than twenty years advising businesses, entrepreneurs and organisations across Australia and internationally.

Following a significant experience of professional burnout, he discovered that meaningful recovery came not only through clinical support but also through reconnecting with nature, farming and purposeful work.

That experience transformed his understanding of education, wellbeing and community.

Today he combines his background in business leadership with a lifelong passion for agriculture to build innovative educational experiences that reconnect people with land, practical skills, resilience and stewardship.

His vision is to establish Australia's largest network of learning farms, creating opportunities for families, schools, universities, partner farms and communities to learn together through authentic agricultural experiences.

James believes that the future of education lies not simply in classrooms, but in experiences that develop character, confidence, practical capability and a lifelong respect for the natural world.

Experience & Vision

Built on 25 Years of Professional Experience

25 Years in Accounting & Business Advisory

For 25 years, founder Mutsa James Simango, CPA, CGMA, worked as an accountant and business adviser — guiding families, business owners and organisations through their most important financial decisions. From budgeting and compliance to strategy and growth, he carried the financial futures of hundreds of clients.

That depth of real-world financial expertise now underpins everything the Academy teaches — from student enterprises and business planning to genuine financial literacy grounded in professional practice, not theory.

The Vision Behind Land & Legacy Academy

Land & Legacy Academy exists to bring people back to something real. The vision is a place where the land teaches what a classroom can't — responsibility, resilience, patience and purpose — for children, families, schools, retirees and professionals alike.

By combining hands-on agriculture with mentoring and real enterprise skills, the Academy builds a legacy of capable, grounded people — restoring wellbeing today while equipping the next generation to lead tomorrow.

Why Land & Legacy Exists

Our Purpose

Australia is becoming increasingly disconnected from the land.

  • Many children have never grown food.
  • Many families rarely spend uninterrupted time together outdoors.
  • Many young people graduate with academic knowledge but little confidence in practical life skills.
  • Many professionals are experiencing stress, isolation and burnout.

We believe these challenges are connected. Land & Legacy exists to rebuild that connection.

Through real farms, real experiences and real relationships, we help people rediscover confidence, curiosity, stewardship and purpose.

We don't simply teach agriculture. We use agriculture as a platform for learning about life.

The Land & Legacy Story

One Simple Discovery

Land & Legacy began with one simple discovery: the land has the power to restore people.

After experiencing severe professional burnout, founder Mutsa James Simango discovered that his own recovery accelerated through reconnecting with nature, caring for animals, growing food and working on the land.

That experience inspired a much larger vision.

Land & Legacy exists to reconnect Australians with the land through authentic educational experiences that build confidence, resilience, stewardship and practical life skills.

Based at Mount Mee, Queensland, the organisation combines agriculture, entrepreneurship, environmental stewardship and experiential learning to create meaningful opportunities for children, families, schools, professionals and communities.

Its long-term vision is to establish Australia's largest network of partner learning farms, allowing thousands of Australians to learn through real agricultural experiences while supporting local farming communities.

At its heart, Land & Legacy believes one simple truth:

Land changes people.

Why Land Matters

A Manifesto

The land feeds us. The land teaches us. The land slows us down.

Long before classrooms existed, people learned by observing seasons, caring for animals, growing food and working together.

Patience

Nothing grows overnight.

Responsibility

Animals depend on consistent care.

Resilience

Every season brings both success and failure.

Gratitude

Harvest always follows faithful work.

In a world dominated by screens, speed and constant distraction, the land offers something increasingly rare. Perspective.

The future will not be shaped only by technology. It will be shaped by people who know how to think, adapt, create, collaborate and care. The land remains one of the greatest classrooms ever created.
