Safety & Wellbeing

Land & Legacy believes that meaningful connection with land and animals is enriching and transformative — and that it can be done safely. We do not see safety and adventure as opposites. Our programs are designed to be engaging, grounding, and well-managed.

We take a risk-informed approach: identifying hazards, implementing controls, and continuously improving based on feedback and incident data.

All partner farms must meet Land & Legacy's baseline safety requirements before hosting participants, including:

• Current public liability insurance (minimum $20 million).
• Site risk assessments and written emergency response plans.
• Safe animal handling protocols and clearly defined participant exclusion zones.
• Adequate first aid equipment and at least one trained first aider on site during sessions.
• Emergency contact information prominently displayed on site.

Farm compliance is reviewed annually and may be subject to spot checks by Land & Legacy staff.

All sessions involving participants under 18 are supervised by a qualified mentor or farm host who holds a current Working With Children Check. Supervision ratios are set based on the activity type, participant age group, and risk level, and are reviewed as part of each program's risk management plan.

Participants are required to disclose relevant medical conditions, allergies, medications, and mobility requirements at the time of enrolment. This information is shared with the assigned mentor and farm host on a strict need-to-know basis for safety purposes only.

Land & Legacy does not administer medication. Where a participant requires regular medication during sessions, a management plan must be agreed with Land & Legacy prior to program commencement.

All incidents and near-misses are recorded and reviewed by Land & Legacy's program team. Serious incidents are reported to relevant authorities as required by law. Participants and guardians are notified of any incident involving their child in a timely manner.

Land & Legacy recognises that participants — particularly young people — may experience emotional challenges during their journey. Mentors are trained to be attentive to emotional wellbeing and to escalate concerns appropriately.

We encourage participants and guardians to speak openly with their mentor or contact Land & Legacy directly if they have any concerns about emotional health or program fit.

The welfare of animals is integral to our programs. All animals involved in Land & Legacy activities are cared for in accordance with applicable animal welfare standards. Participants are taught to interact with animals safely and respectfully, and are never permitted to engage in activities that could cause harm.
